The work world is certainly competitive at the moment; people are getting laid off from positions they have held for years and the job market is flooded not only with people who have just graduated but also those who have been in their careers for some time and are suddenly finding themselves out of work. I graduated in May with a degree in elementary education and like the rest of my fellow graduates found myself facing a tough economy and cold job market. I was not able to find a position. There were many teachers who may have at one time considered retiring at the end of the year but, nervous about economic conditions, decided to hang in there for awhile in their job. So there were fewer positions that were open for new teachers.
I’m not sitting around though. I am all registered to substitute teach throughout the year which will be great and give me a chance to get to know several districts nearby me. I have also decided to take the time to go after my Masters in Education. Getting my masters was always something that I intended to do and this seemed like a better time than any so I decided to seize the opportunity. But I didn’t want to go back to the classroom and commit my days to traveling to campus when I could conceivably be called in to substitute. The answer was to enroll in an online Masters in Education program that would allow me to complete all my work and studying at my home computer where I was comfortable and during the times that were convenient for me.
The online Masters in Education program is the very best use of my time this coming school year as I get my foot in the door and round out my resume.

In the last post I talked about my choice when I was younger to forgo college; to instead try to find the thing in life that would inspire my passion. I was less than enthusiastic about having to suddenly decide on a career and spend substantial money on a degree program that I could wind up settling for in the end. I would rather really discover my true path in life before I committed my education and my money. So that’s what I did. I chose work over college and after bouncing around for some time I finally found my place in the world – in nonprofit.
In nonprofit I was happy, I was myself, and I was home. It didn’t take long to decide that I wanted to pursue nonprofit management in terms of my formal education. But here was the dilemma. In order to go to school would I have to give up my job? The answer, ultimately, was absolutely not. Online learning offered the perfect way to pursue nonprofit management and still keep my job.
The nonprofit management online degree program was the answer to everything that I needed. It would give me the opportunity to do all of my schoolwork online where I could complete assignments, reading, even submit projects, and take exams. This was all on my own terms – in the time during which I was free from work and other responsibilities. This was not to say it was going to be easy in any regard; it would still be a lot of work to juggle. But at least I knew that with online degree programs I would have the option to juggle both instead of having to choose.
My nonprofit management online degree program begins soon and I couldn’t be more excited to start. I finally feel comfortable in my own skin and ready to go after what I want.

I am not a quitter. When I start something I will finish it; even if it takes me awhile. This was certainly the case with my college degree. It’s not like I went to school and had to leave. I just didn’t think it was worth going at that time. I think I was like a lot of kids my age at that time. College looked appealing but for all the wrong reasons. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life – what I wanted to be – and I could hardly imagine pursuing an education for just anything that seemed okay. I didn’t want to settle and I didn’t want to spend all that money on a degree that meant nothing to me. I guess it was the right choice for me at the time.
I will say this, not going directly to college allowed me to really explore what it is that I did want to do. I was really happy in the land of nonprofit and so I wound up settling there after I floated around awhile in marketing and even financial jobs where I was anything but a perfect fit. When I found myself finally working in nonprofit I knew that I had found my home – the place where I gelled; where I was meant to stay.
Finding that comfort zone, however, never lessened my desire for a college education. In fact, it increased my desire to go to school. Now here I was – older, sure but certainly wiser – and finally really passionate about something. I really knew what I wanted to do and I was so excited to pursue it in the classroom. But this was the catch. How could I go back to school for nonprofit management – what I had finally focused on as my degree program of choice – without giving up my career even temporarily? I would soon discover another way.

What happens when our dreams and our goals are interrupted? In most cases, we simply adjust and move on; but it doesn’t mean that our desires to reach those goals or realize those dreams disappear forever. When I left college unexpectedly I knew that I had to do it. My financial aid was denied my second year of school and I just couldn’t afford to continue. I didn’t have the luxury of having my parents pay for college; they were in no position to do so. And I didn’t have the ability to simply pay my own way without help. I left school with a heavy heart; I didn’t want to go but I had to do what I had to do. Since then I have always held the dream of finishing school and seeing my goals finally realized.
This was not to be the case for some time. There was no money in the beginning. And then, when there was money, there was no time. This was before the real dawn of the Internet. Online education was in its infancy and there was not the options that there are today. But now, with so much at our disposal, students are able to take advantage of a great many options that had not existed previously. Now students can earn everything from an online MBA to Masters in Education through Internet programs.
So with the Internet at the ready and the time and money that I needed to continue my education (albeit at home and without the commute to a local university), I was ready to reestablish my goals of getting my business degree even if it was through a different venue than I had originally anticipated. I have officially embarked on my online business degree program and I am happy and proud to live in an era where something like this is possible.

Single parenthood was not what I envisioned for myself but life has a way of taking us down roads that we may not have expected to travel. I would never give up the opportunity to have had my daughter; she is the most precious gift ever given me. However, raising her on my own has been a challenge to say the least. I was only twenty when I had her and college wasn’t an option; I simply went right to work in order to earn a living to support us.
Now that my daughter is entering junior high school she is more independent and there is a little more time for myself to pursue some of the things that I have wanted– including getting my college degree.
It’s interesting. Before I had my daughter and had all the intention in the world of heading off to college I was ready to enter a psychology program. Now, as an adult with a different perspective, I was interested in pursuing something entirely different – an IT degree.
While it was a good idea in theory, however, I still had responsibilities and a full schedule to juggle. I was very unclear about how I was going to manage it all – until I found the option of an online IT degree program.
The Internet is a huge part of our lives today (something that was certainly not the case when I was twenty) and in addition to changing the way most of us work it has also given us options in terms of education. I was able to quickly and conveniently seek out an online IT degree program that would fit into my schedule. I was finally on my way to earning my degree – something that I could do for myself and for my daughter.
