A Degree in Nonprofit Management Helping Me to Stay On Track, Part II
In the last post I talked about my inability to finish anything that I start. I have a long history of never seeing things through to the end and of losing the passion for a project somewhere near the middle. My life had fallen victim to this ongoing behavior, however, and finally I was ready to make a significant change.
Following the path of the career that appealed most to me I decided to pursue nonprofit management, as working with nonprofit organizations had always kept the fire burning in me, so to speak. I decided that pursuing my degree in that genre would enable me to stay engaged in the process and having never earned my degree (as I sort of fizzled out somewhere around my second year of college), this would be a way to redeem myself on that end as well.
I found an online nonprofit management degree program that, so far, is working quite well for me. The reason that this has really captured and held my attention – in addition to the work that I am doing to change my own behavior – is that it doesn’t confine me to a classroom or to a routine that will eventually become too difficult to maintain. By taking classes online I am be able to sort of make my own schedule which works well with my need to shake things up a bit here and there to keep myself from getting bored.
Also, because I’m online and not traveling to a college campus I am able to split my time between school and actually doing the work in a nonprofit organization. I feel accomplished, passionate about what I’m doing, and ready to see it through to the end. And, who knows, if this goes well I may very well consider the possibility of going after an online MBA.
